Lets Get Some Accurate Reviews on Electronics

Blu-Ray technology is the next generation of optical disc format developed by the Blu-Ray Disc Association(BDA) and major developers of consumer electronics, computers, and media manufacturers around the globe. It seems that human technology in robotics, computers, NanoTech and BioTech are coming together to make the species their own god. From my experience working for corporate aliens, from what others have told me, and from numerous articles on the internet, I have come to the conclusion that managers of many corporations show considerable disrespect to their technology workers.

Are we searching for unnecessary information and over loading ourselves? When so much information was not available to us, we could live, isn't it? Then why do we search for any and everything online? Does that make our life better? In the earlier days, people took time to write letters to each other. Some people might think that carpal tunnel syndrome is a new condition of the information technology age, born from long hours of computer keyboarding, but carpal tunnel is not new, it just seems to appear more often because the nature of work has changed. There is a general belief that working for extended periods of time using a computer will lead to an increase in carpal tunnel syndrome, and that jobs such as data entry lead to higher risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.

It would seem that today's nascent Internet technology compromises the functional power of the client/server model in their leasing software; complex algorithms required to amortize income or calculate yields appear hard or even impossible to replicate on a browser. When it comes to workflow software just think of having a simple to-do list at your hands wherein through the workflow software, that to-do list can now also be accessible by other employees from your company through the company network.

If you're not one of the computer-savvy website builders out in the realm of the World Wide Web, or a presentation developer at a Fortune 500 company, think about this: Over 90% of all computers in the world have Flash Player installed in them to adequately view websites and other mediums that incorporate Flash into their pages. Pen drives, chip sticks, thumb drives or USB keys are other terms given to USB flash drives and consist of a small printed circuit board encased either in sturdy plastic or metal; the latter makes flash drives even more hard-wearing. Essentially the same, USB flash drives are available in a variety of styles and colors and even with various uses but all work the same.

If we can drop off 20,000 rats some with electronic pulse devices strapped on them in 20 different locations we can over whelm the enemy, wake up the communication and start movement and then attack after just prior to the coordinated attack we send our an electronic attack to kill the communication and electronics of the enemy. Whole house protection devices can be utilized in homes of almost any size and they provide blanket coverage for all people within the home and as such are highly recommended, especially for families with children, for the overall coverage it provides.

Everyone who has an ISP, understands, or at least knows about how hackers use viruses, Trojans and other web nastiness, to infect and mess up your computer. Recently we read about the Hackers annual convention this year in Las Vegas, DEFCON. It seems that as days go by people are becoming more and more concerned with the security of their money and protecting their personal and financial information from identity thieves and hackers. To be safe is to stay with the latest antivirus and spyware.

Many installers of low voltage outdoor lighting systems wonder how many lights can be added to the system before it is overloaded. Most commercial and industrial low voltage system dealers, vendors and integrators have invested substantially in training their technicians on the technical aspects of installing, maintaining and operating the systems they promote. For commercial and industrial low voltage installations, the field wiring, device mounting, and panel installations are a major portion of the installation.

If you are upgrading your home electrical service, you should consider the addition of a "whole house" surge protector. If you are contemplating a major remodel, the addition of a room or garage, or a new kitchen you should consider upgrading your electrical service. When facing a home repair job that needs electrical home improvement, you should consult a professional, or hopefully take a class at your local building supply store for the best results.

Privacy may be the biggest reason of all for you to invest in a computer headset. Once you have performed the backup, you will want to keep the backup medium stored in a location away from your computer where it will be protected from contamination, heat, and dust, all of which may destroy the data contained on the storage medium. Also, it is important to look for computer finance from a lender who is ready to work with you with the full consideration that you have a bad credit history and are willing to work to improve it.

MODEMS: Modems are the devices, which are used to translate the digital data into the analog format and vice versa. Go Online to Buy Hot Consumer Electronics for the Holidays

As in recent years, experts are forecasting that consumer electronics will top wish lists in the upcoming holiday season. And, although some shoppers continue to favor brick-and-mortar stores, an increasing number of consumers are finding better prices and greater selections of consumer electronics through online stores.

There are three categories of consumer electronics that are forecast to be especially hot this holiday season:

Gaming Systems

The recent launch of Halo 3 left no doubt among entertainment industry experts that video games and video game consoles can rake in more money than Hollywood movie premieres. With over $3 million in sales the first week, Halo 3 - the Xbox 360 signature game - dealt Microsoft a winning hand.

But the Xbox 360 isn't the only gaming system set to heat up during the holiday gift giving season. With its enhanced physicality and interactive community, Nintendo Wii is still considered the breakout gaming system of the decade. From the compelling Wii characters to the dexterity-challenging Nunchuk, every aspect of the Nintendo Wii is engaging and enchanting.

Although in some circles Sony's PlayStation has been left holding the bag, PS3 gaming systems are still hot commodities, especially for families with children. As some of the other gaming systems have skewed their video game releases to the teenage and adult markets, PS3 and PS2 systems have remained home to a vast array of kid-friendly games.

Cell Phones

Although cell phones are ubiquitous, they continue to be in demand. And, despite the hoopla associated with this year's launch of the innovative Apple iPhone, this holiday season will find most shoppers buying established cell phone brands like Nokia, Samsung, and Motorola.

Music and Video Players

When it comes to consumer electronics and the holidays, more people than ever before will be unwrapping music and video players. Apple iPods are expected to be in high demand, as will portable DVD players. And, with an increasing number of people becoming familiar with DVD recorders' multitude of features, DVD player/recorders will also be hot commodities this holiday season.

Buying Consumer Electronics Online

Because online stores don't have the overhead expenses associated with retail brick-and-mortar stores, they are often able to offer the most popular consumer electronics at rock bottom prices. Plus, online store offer the added bonus of allowing consumers to comparison shop in order to find the best deal on gaming systems, cell phones, and music and DVD players.

For example, some online stores will offer a variety of video games bundled with an Xbox 360, which can literally save consumers hundreds of dollars. Aside from bundled systems and other bargains, there are other factors to consider when choosing an online store to buy consumer electronics. These factors include real-time ordering and online inventory (so your gift won't be stuck on backorder), warehouse shipping (rather than having to wait for a middleman to ship the merchandise), and exceptional customer service (such as timely communication and non minimum purchase requirements).

When you find the right store, shopping online for consumer electronics can be a breeze - and a bargain!

Luxe Electronic Gadgets Review

There are so many esoteric, eclectic electronic gadgets that it is difficult to separate the practical and purposeful from the frivolous and senseless. And when tastes and personal preferences are factored into the mix, it is not as simple as separating gold and tin into two discernible piles.
There are entire personal-communication systems that fit into mobile phones. Sunglasses and wristwatches now are multidimensional communications and entertainment products. Mobile phones not only serve as entertainment centers and GPS navigational systems, the units also are viewed as jewelry and complementing accessories to one's fashion persona.

Apparently, Baskin & Robbins was really onto something when it decided to offer as many flavors as possible and to treat each tasty twist with the same reverence usually reserved for vanilla and chocolate. B&R was among the first firms to grasp that true luxury embodies a wide berth of available options. If something is made well, it will appeal to consumers of discerning tastes. The marketplace for electronic gadgets and games is truly a phenomenon of the 21st century.

We eat blueberries and talk into BlackBerrys. It is difficult to say whether any gadgets or accessories will amaze and enthrall us like the abacus did the Babylonians back in 300 BCE. While, abaci, which are still in use today, have endured for centuries, the eras of eight-track tape players, rotary-dial telephones, and VCRs are already ancient history. Does anyone still remember when mobile phones were as large as one of Shaquille O'Neal's sneakers, or when television sets did not come with remote controls?

The ever-changing landscape of new electronic gadgets and games is a byproduct of modern technology that is evolving faster than ever. The Luxé Electronic Gadgets Review plugs into today's latest wizardry. However, do stay tuned for upgrades, enhancements, and new product introductions throughout the year.

When it comes to mobile phones with intelligence, the BlackBerry line is summa cum laude with its front-row bleeding-edge technology. After all, it is a handheld mobile phone that works like a multi-port personal computer. And if that isn't enough to prompt a wow from the galley, the new BlackBerry Pearl 8100 is smaller and sleeker than its magnificent predecessors. Aside from being a phone that allows international roaming between North America, Europe and Asia Pacific, it comes with multimedia capabilities and 64 MB of memory, which is easily expandable.

Wearable electronics sounds like something movie characters like Batman or James Bond might wear. Although the terminology possesses a futuristic, science-fiction tone, it accurately describes intelligently designed multiuse products, such as the O ROKR. The O ROKR is Oakley's fourth release of a pair of eyewear with a built-in mobile phone and an MP3 player. It is Bluetooth-driven eyewear. The O ROKR is a collaborative effort by Oakley and Motorola. The O ROKRs come in three distinct colors, and there are stylish versions of it for both men and women.

V-Moda presents "hearwear" that dazzles the eyes, perks the ears, and piques the interests of both fashion and music aficionados. The Modaphone Hearwear collection is a series of fashionable earphones with the sparkle of jewelry and the clarity of high-end earphones. There are four models. Each model is made from super-soft silicon with fittings that are offered in three sizes. The fabulous four are individually known as the Bass Fréq, the Vibe, the Remix M Class, and the Modawrap. The earphones are compatible complements to Apple's iPods, Microsoft's Zune, and various other MP3 players.

It is all in the numbers. Escort Radar manufactures the best radar/laser detectors, as the company owns over 85 percent of all radar and laser patents in use. Radar/laser detectors are legal to use in 49 states. Virginia and Washington, DC, are the only exceptions. With all the coupes, roadsters, sedans, and even SUVs capable of accelerating beyond 150 mph smoothly and effortlessly, it is easy to see how even the most responsible driver could err at a most inopportune time. Escort Radar's Passport 8500 X50 circumvents such mishaps from occurring.

Sony's S2 Sports Walkman MP3 Player is a fit gift for any athlete on the list. The two-gigabyte model stores up to 1,350 songs, and it plays up to 18 hours on an embedded battery that provides three hours on three-minute charge. It also contains an FM tuner for alternate listening choices to get through the workout time. The S2 is lightweight and has a bright, easy to read organic electroluminescence display.

It came as no surprise that when Motorola wanted to glitz out its RAZR V3i that a call was placed to the glamorous team of Domenico and Stefano to add the D and G magic. These guys could make cat litter glitter. So, ascending a streamline, renowned luxury cell phone to jewelry-level status would be a golden opportunity for them to leave another mark of distinction.

As long as the road is in North America, getting lost while driving will not happen if there is a StreetPilot in the vehicle. This GPS-satellite-navigational system, which is no larger than a baseball, is guaranteed to always pitch straight info to drivers. Plus it can easily be removed from one vehicle and placed in another, as it securely attaches to windshields with a suction cup. It is a perfect gift for the soon-to-be rich student, or an ideal addition to the classic car of a bygone era.

Having knowledge at your fingertips makes for a great metaphor. Having knowledgeable info conveyed instantly from an easy-to-use handheld device makes for a very innovative and entertaining product. The SkyScout by Celestron, with its advanced GPS technology, can be used during the day or night. Turn it on and its built-in menu provides operating info simple enough that even adults can operate it without muss of fuss.

When hip-hop, country or rock artists put out a song that has universal appeal beyond its anticipated audience, the hit song is a crossover. So, if a cell phone contains 140 grams of solid gold and is studded with diamonds, would it be a crossover into the jewelry marketplace as well as being a cell phone? There are so many people observed daily constantly holding cell phones against their ears. Many of these sleek machines could easily be mistaken for over-sized earrings. The Illusion, which is GoldVish's sparkling collection of personal luxury communication devices, is for real.

The Sony Ericsson Bluetooth Watch MBW-100 is a very practical, intelligent device that hits the underbelly of anyone who has ever imagined being a super sleuth or a suave secret agent like James Bond. The MBW-100 is a wristwatch with Bluetooth technology. When used with its wireless Bluetooth headset, the sophisticated wristwatch manages calls and music as simply as checking the time. This is a must-have for all lovers of bleeding-edge communications technology.

The thought of installing a telephone in one of the most intimate rooms in the house once left us bewildered, but this takes the cake. The iCarta dock from Atech Flash mounts easily onto the wall, charges your iPod while playing music, and features four integrated moisture-free speakers, which deliver exceptional clarity and high quality sound. The cost of replacing the NY Times for some Top 40 runs 100 dollars.

Since so many cell phones come equipped with MP3 capabilities, it only makes sense to make a dock designed with Bluetooth® Technology. The Altec Lansing T515 wireless speaker system features a speakerphone, a headset with a microphone, and a Bluetooth frequency up to 30 feet. Just a touch of a button allows you to easily switch from your favorite song to any incoming calls you receive.

The Altec Lansing T515 is priced at 150 dollars.
From business professionals to aspiring musical artists, the MicroMemo turns your second generation iPod Nano into a portable, pocket-sized recording studio. You can capture audio using the flexible, detachable microphone and import it onto your computer where you can edit it later. With this little device you can record interviews, meetings, lectures, lyrics, or even your grocery list. The MicroMemo is priced at 60 dollars.

In addition to the enhanced features of the MDR EX71SLB Fontopia headphones, they carry a bargain price tag, available for around £25 at the time of writing, making these headphones superb value for money.
As with most Sony headphones, the MDR EX71SLB Fontopias are designed in a classic modern style, in black and silver. The super small 9mm drivers give a very comfortable fit, and include the sonic isolation of soft silicon ear buds. The snug in ear fit allows for better sound quality as any background noise in reduced. A significant problem with a lot of ear bud style headphones is they are poor fitting, allowing ambient noise to leak in. This in turn leads you to turn the volume up to hear what you are listening to and can lead to hearing damage. The package also includes three sizes of ear buds giving the flexibility to fit a full range of sizes of ears, a 400-kj/m3 a Ultra-High-Power Neodymium Magnet, a hard carrying case, one meter extension cord, and an earbud holder.

Features of the Sony MDR EX71SLB Fontopia Headphones Black include:

# In ear design fits snugly yet comfortably inside the ear allowing you to enjoy music while excercising.
# The first closed-type Fontopia design from Sony reduces ambient noise and helps generate powerful, resonant bass response.
# New, super-small 9 mm drivers create powerful audio with space left over for the sonic isolation of Sony's newly-designed silicon ear buds.
# Soft, ergonomic silicon ear buds decrease background noise from outside, giving a comfortable fit even when worn for extended periods of time; the ear buds are washable, removable and replaceable.
# Trendy neck-chain cord.
# Gold-plated mini-plug for outstanding corrosion resistance, excellent conductivity and low noise.
# Sleek, compact case tidily stores the ear-buds and headphone cord when not in use. With a colourful purple design, the high-impact case is ideal for carrying in your pocket or a backpack.
# New case design minimizes cord tangles; partial winding can shorten the effective cord length during use

Whether you are replacing the headphones supplied with your iPod or you are looking for a great value pair of headphones for your portable music player the Sony MDR EX71SLB Fontopia Headphones Black are well worth considering.

The new Salvation Helicopter is a lightweight radio controlled micro helicopter, which has been featured on the new reality TV show, “Tycoon” on ITV1. This article aims to give you more information on micro rc helicopters, they are great fun to fly indoors, and Salvation helicopters, the new micro heli that is giving these top toys national TV fame and fortune!

Tycoon is a new reality-based TV show starring multi-millionaire entrepreneur Peter Jones who made his name on Dragon’s Den. Based in Tycoon Tower on London’s South Bank, six budding businessmen and women will live and work together with the winning entrepreneur scooping the total profits made during the programme by all 6 companies. As well as being their mentor, Peter Jones will also judge each of the six entrepreneurs, and as we know he is not one to mince his words! He will be advising them and pushing them to make loads of money quickly, bringing down the axe on the companies he feels are lagging behind and not making the grade and leaving the remaining companies to battle it out on the final show which is subject to a public viewers vote.

One of the contestants on the show is Ian Morgan. He has an ambition to import new radio controlled micro helicopters into the UK, the first of these being Salvation helicopters.

With two counter-rotating blades, the Salvation 1 helicopter is very tiny, weighing in at a miniscule 20 grams! The 2 blades are manufactured from strong crash proof carbon fibre and make it very stable to fly using the 3-channel remote control that lets you steer the chopper up and down, left and right, forward and back. There is full trim control, which is unusual on micro helis such as Salvation helicopters. There is a rechargeable battery on board giving up to 15 minutes flying time between charges and each charge takes around 30 minutes to complete.

The Salvation helicopter is an excellent helicopter for the price; you can buy it for under £50! It is super lightweight and extremely

stable with full control from the 3 channel handset making it highly manouvreable. Unlike most indoor rc helicopters, the Salvation helicopter can be flown backwards. Having flown the Salvation helicopter for many hours I can recommend it. I for one hope that Ian Morgan wins the Tycoon show because the Salvation 1 micro helicopter is a top toy!

Texas Instruments Ti-83 Plus Calculator

Calculators have shrunk in size and increased in price as consumers have sought out devices that do much more than simple arithmetic. Texas Instruments has their TI-83 Plus model which helps students with their Physics, Biology, Algebra, and Pre-Calculus classes. We'll examine why this model is so popular with today's classroom students.

Back in the 1970s, the slide rule gave way to calculators in many classrooms across the nation. Texas Instruments led the way as almost every student owned one of their models. Today, Texas Instruments [or, TI] continues to produce calculators and their TI-83 Plus calculator leads the way.
So, what sets this particular model apart from others? Well, it is pocket-sized, comes with 12MB of memory, does tons of math problems including statistical tests, has a complete alphabetical keyboard, and it can run programs to name a few. Still, if you are a Calculus student it doesn't do Calculus. However, you can bring the TI-83 Plus along for standardized tests and college admission exams.

The device runs with 4AAA batteries, so you need to make sure you are fully charged before you start your tests or at least carry spare batteries with you.

The TI-83 is not cheap as you will have to pay about $100. for a new one. Expect to pay a lot more if you purchase one through your university's bookstore; shop online to compare prices too.

The TI-89 may be a better option, especially if Calculus is in your future. Shop and compare and make sure that the model you want provides the calculations you need.

In all, the TI-83 carries on a long tradition of excellence for Texas Instruments. Sharp, Casio, and Canon are chief competitors to T.I., but judging by the TI-83 you will find what you need from the people of Texas Instruments.

Toshiba Qosmio G15-av501 Notebook Computer

Purchasing a notebook computer can be a mind boggling experience with all the different makes and models out there. Toshiba has a strong entry in their Toshiba Qosmio G15-AV501 notebook computer. Let's examine why this particular model is certain to be an effective competitor.

Unlike most laptops the Qosmio takes computing to the next level. You can watch your favorite TV programs, play DVDs, or listen to music by way of its Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 operating system. Sporting a 17" screen the Qosmio offers a nifty 1440 x 900 pixels resolution perfect for TV or video watching. Other key features of the Qosmio include:

* Intel Pentium M 745 Processor (Centrino), 1.8 GHz

* 512MB Memory

* Television Tuner

* Exceptionally Bright Screen

* DVD±RW/CD-RW Combination, 2 Hard Drives

* Wireless LAN Antenna

* Remote Controller

* Video Card

* NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5700

* Weighs just under 10 lbs.

As much as the Qosmio is an effective performer, I have learned that the battery life is very short compared to models half its $2500. sticker price. That's right, $2500 [shop around, as prices vary]. So, only serious

multimedia experts will go for this machine and they will be keeping it constantly plugged in to boot! Any software you add will be extra, therefore expect to shell out well in excess of three grand if adding a productivity package, extended warranty, shipping, handling, taxes and the like.

Still, serious multimedia fans will find the Toshiba Qosmio to be a top performer in an ever expanding sea of laptop computers. For that reason alone it is worth a special look.

# Camera with flash and digital zoom

Oh, yeah, the 6255i can also be successfully used to talk with someone too! This is almost an afterthought when you consider its terrific features.

Because of its popularity, no less than twelve service providers have signed on to sell this 4.4 oz wonder. Therefore, your choices of carriers are excellent; shop around and compare the best plans.

I have seen the 6255i offered for as low as $49 after rebates when a two year plan is purchased. Not bad when you consider that the model retails for as much as $299 when purchased separately. You may be able to find an even better offer when shopping online.

Other leading Nokia flip top models worth a look include the 6170 featuring a camera, video, and voice capabilities; and the 7270 featuring GSM capabilities. In all, Nokia remains a formidable competitor in the ever growing cell phone marketplace and the 6255i is a strong entrant.

3 Hot Selling Notebook Computers

The laptop market is an overcrowded field with literally hundreds of offerings available to consumers. Some laptops are very basic models with Celeron processors while others are full blown multimedia powerhouses. Featured here are three top models from the “plain Jane” to the middle of the road, to the fully loaded.

Dell Inspiron 1200 – It is possible to purchase a notebook computer for considerably less than $1000 and Dell offers several models below this threshold including the Inspiron 1200. This particular model is the price leader amongst laptops especially when rebates are figured in. A recent Dell advertisement has been touting the Inspiron 1200 for just $499 after a $150For rebate is received. What do you get with this model? Not a whole lot: an Intel Celeron M Processor 350 (1.30 GHz/1MB Cache/400MHz FSB); Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition; 30GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive; and 24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive. Surprisingly, Dell does include wireless capabilities in the form of a networking card.
HP Compaq nx9600 Notebook – HP’s acquisition of Compaq has produced a nice line up of notebook computers including this particular model geared toward those consumers replacing their desktop computer. Retailing at just over $1300 [before $100 rebate] this midrange offering is nicely loaded as it offers a 17" screen; Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition; an Intel Pentium 4 Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology; a 40 GB hard drive; a 12 cell battery; wireless connectivity; and graphics oriented software.

Sony VAIO FS675P/H Notebookspacer – The Sony Vaio name is typically associated with high performing, high priced offerings. The VAIO® FS675P/H Notebookspacer fits the bill as this workhorse retails at just under $2000. Chief features of this model are: an Intel Pentium M Processor 750 (1.86 Ghz); Microsoft Windows XP Professional; DVD+R Double Layer/DVD+-RW; 1GB RAM; and a 100GB hard drive. The screen is 15.4" Widescreen5 LCD with XBRITE™ Technology and all of Sony’s top digital software for photography, video and audio are included as standard equipment.

All three models attract different types of consumers, but each model is a standout in its respective class. Consumers are the winner when it comes to shopping for a laptop as prices continue to drop, new features are added, and technology improves with every new model marketed.

Dell Inspiron 600m Notebook Computer

After twelve years of owning desktop computers, I finally opted for a laptop so I would no longer be chained to my desk. After months of research and weighing various makes and models, I settled on the Dell Inspiron 600m Notebook Computer. This particular model has exceeded all of my expectations and at a price that is hundreds of dollars lower than many competing brands.

For several months I agonized over my next computer purchase. I knew I needed to be more mobile and only a notebook computer would permit me to take my "show on the road." Still, the decision making process was not easy as the number of different makes and models out there is mind boggling. Ultimately, I settled on a Dell in part because of previous good experience with the company as well as affordability of their product line.
The model I chose was the Inspiron 600m. As with almost everything that Dell builds, it is a "new" model; at least the 600m designation is. That is one of the confusing things about Dell and some other manufacturers: every month Dell introduces new models and you need a scorecard to compare one model with all the others. Fortunately, Dell's website allows you to do just that.

Key features of the Inspiron 600m include:

Lightweight: Just over five pounds.

Mobile Centrino Technology is standard.

14.1 inch screen

Pentium M 725 Processor

24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive

256MB DDR SDRAM 1 Dimm Memory

Wireless Network Card

Extended Battery

Microsoft Windows XP Home Addition

WordPerfect Productivity Pack

I kept my computer fairly basic but I did opt for the latest version of Norton Security, a surge protected cable, a wirless router, and a wireless mouse. I selected the wireless mouse as I thought the keyboard's mouse would be difficult to use. After two days I quit using the wireless mouse as I quickly got used to the built in one.

The screen is bright and the keyboard is solid. The mouse keys, however are noisy, almost clunky; you wonder if Dell could have used a quieter spring for each key.

The battery lasts at least four hours without recharging and when I do need to recharge I can go from nearly dead to fully charged in less than one hour.

For the price -- I paid just over $1100. for everything including shipping and local taxes -- the Dell cannot be beat. I haven't had to call customer service yet, so I cannot comment on that although in years past your call would be routed to a technician in India. This model comes with a standard one year limited warranty; I avoided a later sales pitch over the phone to get a three year warranty. Their top of the line warranty sends a technician to your house to fix your computer, so it can be option for those of you who do not want to ship -- and thereby lose the use of -- your computer back to Dell for repairs.

You will find the Inspiron 600m to be adequate for standard business work. Check out their myriad of other models if you do plenty of graphic design or if you need a larger screen. I am happy with the 14.1 screen, but you may prefer their 17" model.

Linsksys CIT310 Yahoo Phone

Yahoo hasn’t made as large of an impact on the world of VoIP as Skype or Vonage has, but that doesn’t mean it did not try to leave its mark. Using the popular Yahoo! Messenger service one can get pretty simple VoIP service that is also pretty cheap. However, if you don’t have a phone that works with the system you are limited to a microphone and speakers or a headset in terms of actually talking on the phone using the service.

That is where the Linksys CIT310 Yahoo Phone comes into play. It is the only official phone on the market that is designed to work in sync with Yahoo’s internet phone service. And it works with it very well. Installation is pretty simple: it plugs in through a USB port and there are minimal amounts of software you will need to install in order to get the phone to work.

Once it is installed, the Linksys CIT310 phone connects directly with your Yahoo Messenger. You can, for example, see when your friends are online through the handset on the phone (it is cordless, of course), you can set your online status, check the weather and use the Yahoo! yellow pages functionality (meaning you can search for businesses in your area right from the handset).

Calls made over the Linksys CIT310 are crystal-clear, much higher quality than you would get from a headset using the Yahoo! phone services. Unfortunately this clarity somewhat depends on your Internet connection, you’ll definitely need a high quality high-speed internet set-up (DSL, Cable, etc.) in order to use the phone properly. You pretty much need to keep the Internet connection clear, though, no major downloading or anything else heavy on the network going on when you are using the phone.

The handset on the Linksys CIT310 Yahoo phone is pretty powerful in terms of range. The range goes up to 100 feet and offers the same crystal clear clarity all the way for those 100 feet. Walls and buildings can cut up the range a little bit, but for the most part this badboy will go just about anywhere you want to go; it is a lot more powerful than many normal cordless phones.

In fact, the Linksys CIT310 not only has compatibility with Yahoo Messenger phone services, it also works as a cordless phone all of its own. It is a dual-mode phone, meaning that it can work not only through Yahoo Messenger but also just by plugging it into your phoneline.

At about 80 dollars the phone is a little bit expensive, but it offers plenty of functionality for the price. Especially since the Yahoo phone system it works with it pretty cheap: you can get your own phone number through Yahoo Messenger for a minimal $3.00 a month, and long distance services are only $0.02 for anywhere in the US, cheaper to some countries (like Canada, only $0.01 a minute). It is a powerful system and very portable, if you want to use Yahoo phone services the Linksys CIT310 Yahoo phone is an excellent addition.

Microsoft Zune Review

Microsoft would badly like to take away Apple’s title as king of the MP3 player world, and the Microsoft Zune is their attempt to take the crown for itself. This is their first foray into the world of MP3 players, and only time will tell if the Zune line of products will one day be able to one day take the top spot.

The Zune offers an impressive 30 GB hard drive, meaning you can fit a whole lot of media on there. It’s got a decent sized 3 inch screen, good for both pictures as well as video. The graphical UI is pretty simple and straight forward, as well as nice to look at, so there isn’t too much of a learning curve when you first pick up a Zune and start playing all sorts of music and videos, as well as looking at your pictures.

It definitely looks pretty stylish and comes in three colors: black, white and brown. Nothing too terribly fancy but definitely appealing to the eye. This is all done in a package that isn’t too large and isn’t too small, it’s a pretty nice fit, actually. It is a bit bigger than a similarly sized iPod, but oh well.

Like the iPod the Zune comes with its own online store: the Zune Marketplace. Here you can buy all the music that you want and put it into place on your handy dandy Microsoft Zune. It runs following a set-up similar to Napster and other online music stores, part of the problem is, though, that currently there are no movies for sale through the Zune Marketplace, you can only buy music.

Another problem with the Zune is the fact that it isn’t backwards compatible with Windows Media Audio (WMA). Basically it only works with WMA-DRM 9.1 and up files; if you’ve got WMA-DRM 9.0 or less, well, it isn’t going to work with the Microsoft Zune. Even a bigger slap in the face is the fact that it doesn’t WMV files for movies. Considering that this is the official video format for the Windows Media Player and other Microsoft products, this really doesn’t make any sense to me. Since WMV is known for being able to produce high quality video playback in a smaller size than, say, the MP4, this is a real let down.

One of the highlights of the Microsoft Zune is its wi-fi compatibility. This makes it very simple to share files between two Zune players. Of course, both people have to have the Zune in order to do this wi-fi sharing, which means you’ll have to hope you have friends who also use the Zune to share. The shared files also have limited playback; you can only play them every so often.

At $250 the Microsoft Zune isn’t too badly priced, and it is pretty easy to use. The biggest drawback is definitely its playback support; it only supports some files and there are a lot of major file formats that can’t be played, particularly when it comes to video files.

Sony Playstation 3 Review

Ever since the launch of the original Sony Playstation all the way back in 1996 Sony has been a force to reckon with in the world of console games. The Playstation 2 only served to solidify its base as the premier gaming console out there. Now the Playstation 3 is the newest Playstation on the market.

The Sony Playstation 3 certainly has a lot to offer. It’s got a beautiful and slick design that makes it very attractive sitting there in your media center. It can both lie horizontally and stand up vertically, making it easier to fit in wherever you need it than ever. Just based on looks it is certainly a nice piece of technology.

Add to that excellent design plenty of functionality. It comes in two versions; one has a 30 GB hard drive and the other has a 60 GB hard drive, more than you are going to get on many notebook computers. That’s a lot of storage punch and definitely one of the highlights of the Sony Playstation 3.

Just as the Sony Playstation 2 was backwards compatible with Playstation One games, so is the Playstation 3 backwards compatible with both Playstation 2 and Playstation One games. This is really nice, no having to get rid of all your old games because they won’t work with your new console: they work perfectly with your console, no problem whatsoever.

Sony is of course behind the new Blu Ray technology which is hoping to win as the next generation of digital video technology (its main competitor is the HD-DVD), and the Sony Playstation 3 can play Blu Ray disks. Don’t worry, though, it is also backwards compatible with old school DVDs. In fact, hoping to boost sales of the new PS3 Sony is offering 5 free Blu Ray movies with the purchase of a Sony Playstation 3 these days.

The Sony Playstation 3 boasts unbelievable graphics, it also boasts excellent online play through the Playstation Network that is also 100% free. That means you can play games with other players with absolutely no cost, unlike some other major consoles out there. The online system is also built into the console; no need for any additional components.

There are a couple of problems with the system. For one thing, the controller doesn’t have any rumble capability (something which has been around since the PSOne). This problem will most likely be fixed, but it is somewhat of an annoyance if you are used to the rumble functionality. It uses BlueTooth technology for the remote, which is good, but it has no infrared port on the device, meaning that you can’t use a traditional universal remote for DVD watching; it has to be BlueTooth. These are a bit more expensive and this is a drawback for the PS3.

The biggest single drawback to the Sony Playstation 3 is definitely the price. It is the most expensive console by far on the market, and the games available on it still don’t set it apart from the pack compared to, say, the X-Box 360 or the Nintendo Wii. However the underlying technology is incredibly powerful and sophisticated, so there is definitely room for the games available to improve.

Marine Electronics

Autopilots The first self-steering gear was introduced in the 1920's to control model yachts but it was not until 1948 that the principle was applied to full scale yachts. Standing at the helm for lengthy periods, monitoring instruments and keeping a good look out can be very tiring. An autopilot relieves the helmsman from steering the correct course leaving him free to maintain a proper watch. The autopilot can be set to either steer a compass course or a course relative to the wind. A fluxgate compass or electronic wind indicator feeds information to a microprocessor which then makes the necessary rudder movements to return the vessel to it's required course. The mechanical power is applied to the rudder by either electric linear activators, hydraulic pumps or rotary drives. GPS/Chart plotters can be used to input navigational instructions to the autopilot.

Battery Chargers will keep batteries fully charged thereby extending their working life.

Chart Plotters Typically a chart plotter consists of an antenna, mounted high on the boat, to track GPS signals and a display unit sited either at the at the navigation station or the helm of the vessel. The vessels position is sent from the antenna to the display unit which in turn shows it graphically on the chart. The Chart itself will look similar to it's paper equivalent and show depth, land mass, navigational aids such as bouys and potential dangers in the form of wrecks and obstructions. The user can add way points to the chart and zoom in and out of the display. Chart plotters can be connected to drive an autopilot and/or send GPS data to a fish finder or radar. They can also interface with a laptop enabling complex passage planning to be done away from the boat and then entered into the chart plotter after arriving at the boat.

Magnetic Transmitting Compasses work like traditional compasses using magnets to determine the vessels orientation to the earth's magnetic field they then transmit the boats heading to an electronic display. They make steering easier than with conventional compasses because they display steadier headings and do not suffer from the "lag" that occurs when making a turn. They can interface with chart plotters, autopilots and radar. Fluxgate Compasses consist of two pieces of readily saturated magnetic material with coils wound round them in opposing directions. AC current is passed through the coils and the material is saturated in one direction and then the other. The earth's magnetic field affects slightly the time at which saturation occurs, earlier in one coil and later in the other. The difference is then calculated giving an output proportional to the earth's magnetic field. They are accurate to 0.1 of a degree. Their output can be displayed digitally to the helmsman or they can interface with autopilots, chart plotters and radar.

Echo Sounders work on the same principle as sonar. A transducer emits a narrow beam of high frequency sound. This is reflected by any solid objects and the time between transmission and receipt of the echo is measured. The speed of sound through water is know and so the range or distance to the sea bed can be calculated. That is then displayed in metres. Forward Looking Sonar (FLS) enables you to see the underwater hazards before you're actually on top of them. A typical range for a FLS is 150 metres.

An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is a piece of equipment designed to float free of a vessel in distress. It then sends a radio signal that can be detected by Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (SARSAT) satellites. They relay a message to a ground station that in turn can instigate a search and rescue operation.

Fish Finders use the same technology as sonar. A narrow beam of high frequency sound is transmitted by a transducer, this is reflected by solid objects such as the sea bed. By developing this technology fishfinders provide displays that show where the fish are and they can differentiate between bait fish and larger species

Global Positioning System (GPS Receivers) - This system was originally designed for military purposes and is owned and operated by the United States Department of Defence. 24 satellites are arranged in a "birdcage" around the globe, they are positioned in such a way that at any place on the earth's surface a direct line of sight can be established to a minimum of 4 satellites. A fix is obtained by measuring accurately the distance between a satellite and the GPS receiver at a precise time. Because the exact position of the satellite is known, these distances provide position lines which are converted by a microprocessor within the GPS receiver to read outs of latitude and longitude.

The log is used to measure the boats speed through the water. A paddle wheel or impeller, mounted below the waterline is turned by the flow of water, this generates electrical impulses that are fed to a microprocessor that displays both speed and distance run.

Inverters - On most boats today you will find domestic equipment of one sort or another. For on board entertainment there are televisions and stereo systems. With the popularity of chart plotters comes the PC or laptop. Maintenance often requires the use of power tools. Liveaboards might have a washing machine, dishwasher or microwave. Can take 12v, 24v or 48v supply and convert it to a stable 110 v or 220v AC supply.

Navtex can perhaps best be described as a continuously updated telex service providing navigation and weather information within specified areas. An on board receiver, tuned to 518kHz, the worldwide Navtex frequency, if left turned on will either print out or display the latest massages sent from a local station. The service is available up to 400 miles from the coast.

Radar enables you to see what otherwise would be invisible. They offer greatest benefit at night and in fog or rain and are of particular value when close to shore or in busy shipping lanes. They consist of an antenna and a display. The antenna sends out a stream of RF energy which is reflected back off hard objects. When this energy is bounced back it is converted to a signal which displayed to the user. The antenna rotates every few seconds, the display continuously calculates the direction of the antenna and so a precise bearing to the target is calculated. The time is measured for the energy to be reflected and so the distance of the target is also displayed.

Satellite Phones consist of an antenna, a modem and a normal handset. They are powered by an iridium battery. Their range is anywhere covered by in Inmarsat Mini-M satellite. Voice, fax, email and data can be transmitted.

Satellite TV requires an antenna and of course a television. Reception is available within a "footprint" which is based on EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) of a transmitting satellite. The EUTELSAT together with the two ASTRA satellites cover Europe. NILESAT and the two ARABSATs cover Africa and the Middle East. Good coverage is also available in North, Central and Southern America.

SSB Radio has a range of several thousand miles. You will need an FFC license, or the equivalent in whichever country you plan to operate it. Power consumption is a consideration. Up to 100 Watts may be required for transmission. SSB radio requires several items of equipment. A transceiver capable of SSB operation, An antenna, this must be 8 metres long and in practice most boats use a backstay or shroud for the purpose having fitted the necessary insulators. An antenna tuner matched to the transceiver model. If you want to send email you will also need and radio modem and computer.

VHF Radio The power required to transmit is minimal, all sets have the option of transmitting on either 1 Watt or 25 Watts and the lower power should be used whenever possible. Unlike telephones that allow you to both talk and hear at the same time most VHF sets require you to press a transmit button prior to talking. This is known as simplex. Duplex sets are available but are much more expensive. VHF radio waves travel in straight lines so the aerial should be mounted as high as possible, preferably at the masthead.

Why Has The Nintendo Wii Become So Popular In Japan

Two weeks after it was released in the US late last year, the Nintendo Wii came out in Japan, and consoles literally flew off the shelves. Reports received from areas such as Akihabara (the major electronics district of Tokyo) and Shinjuku (another massive shopping location) said that it was nearly impossible to walk down the sidewalk anywhere near an electronics store.

Without doubt, the most popular choice of games console by the Japanese people is the Nintendo Wii, although the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have sold quite well in Japan. You couldn't escape the ads for Wii anywhere last year, and it seemed to be all Japanese video gamers were talking about. So, why is the Nintendo Wii, loved so much in Japan?

To start with, the Nintendo's have always outsold the other gaming systems in Japan. A survey noted that the Nintendo games tend to contain subject matter that was interesting to Japanese gamers. They said that the Nintendo games appeal to all ages and tastes.

The interactive features of the Nintendo Wii have become extremely popular. The Nintendo Wii makes use of a new remote sensing technology, which means that while playing a game, such as golf you can actually take a swing to hit the ball. Naturally, this technology has caught on with the non-gamers as well as gamers. Recent studies have discovered that more woman and older adults, demographic groups that don't normally go for games consoles in a big way, get a big kick out of the Wii's interactive features.

There was tons of promotion and advertising. It was almost impossible to get anywhere near an electronics store in Japan at the end of last year without noticing a guy dressed up like a giant remote controller, or kids of all ages crammed around a Wii demo console. The Wii was witnessed just about everywhere last year, much more so than any of the other consoles. With such a big push off, it had to be popular.

One of the main strengths of the Wii console is it sports games. Lately, sports games have become more and more popular in Japan, and they have started to outsell the more traditionally popular adventure games such as Legend of Zelda. The Wii offers great quality, realistic golf, baseball and tennis, among others. For the Japanese gamers, these are a great step forward from the sports games of yesterday.

Then again, maybe the massive popularity of the Wii in Japan is due to those wacky pictures in its safety manual. The Wii has been stirring up headlines worldwide mainly because of the Wii strap related incidents, and the Japanese safety manual covers everything. It's packed with comically rendered pictures of housewives whacking their husbands around the head with controllers, Wii-motes stuck halfway down a child's throats, and people injuring themselves in a variety of outlandish ways. Do a quick internet search yourself and see if you can find some pictures!

While the Nintendo Wii is undoubtedly the most popular new gaming system in Japan, the PlayStation 3 does come in as a close second. Some sources on the web believe that the PS3 does actually sell better, but it's hard to say for sure. Certainly, the new interactive features are a draw for Japanese people, who are always searching for something new to enhance their gaming experience.

Information Awareness and Electronic Civilization Grid Defense System

Most people do not want the government intruding in their lives. They do not wish to have the government listening to their phone calls, knowing their locations or watching their every move. Sure that makes sense but that is not actually how it works. No one has time to watch you pick-up your kid's from Karate Practice. Rather it is a safety system, a net if you will and if something goes down. If your child is abducted or Al Qaeda Terrorists try to pull some shenanigans then you will be very glad to see this is in place.

It is a lot like Zone Defense in basketball, law enforcement or outlining threat assessment in the modern net-centric battlespace. The question is; Do you want to Win or are you willing to accept a "Sneak Attack" because even if an attack only gets a few thousand people in the United States, if we attack back it saves the world millions of lives on a second reciprocal response. And it saves us on the political or mass media fall-out from a pre-emption. So with a system in place you can cut out the cancer, before it gets growing. You see?

Those who condemn such have other thoughts on grounds of liberty, constitutionality and such they need to recall some recent Supreme Court cases and the right to privacy again? The government won the last case, it is all legal and you are not granted the right to security of data from a third party.

You use an internet provider, ISP, company to rent a car, fly a plane, credit card, etc? That information is not guaranteed protected? You want to take a magazine or fill out a form? Once you do all bets are off says the Supreme Court. So, if someone really has a problem with that, they need to take it up there. A case like that would cost 500,000 K minimum to hear and you might not like the results you hear when you are through or someone once said.

I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple, to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

Teens: Life v. Electronics

Teens today have so much more to distract them besides their homework, the opposite sex, friends, family members, and extracurricular activities. Besides learning how to drive, teenagers are occupied with playing with an assortment of electronic gizmos including cell phones, camera phones, personal computers, MP3 players, DVD players, ipods, xboxs, digital cameras, the list goes on. Wired? You betcha…and then some. Perhaps all of this electronic gadgetry has you concerned and you are wondering just how you can extract your teen and involve them in an outside activity where they can expand their minds and refresh their bodies. Are you out of ideas? Let’s look at some options that may appeal to them and remove the worry from you.

Work on the Car So, you think that a car isn’t a kid magnet as much as when you first learned how to drive? Think again. Today, kids are pimping their rides and expressing themselves through their cars. Custom paint, decals, blacked out windows, even faux aircraft wings are being attached to the outside of their cars. On the inside, it can be totally surreal: rear view mirrors wrapped with a studded belts, frilly seat cover trim, pushpin art attached to the headliner, decals everywhere, etc. Let them pimp your Camry or Explorer…that’ll keep them off the computer…and get you noticed too!

Volunteer Help your teen organize a group of his or her friends to clean up the neighborhood, paint an elderly neighbor’s house, teach younger kids how to ride bikes, or visit folks at the local nursing home. You remember when you were a teen and you heard the comments from your parent’s generation about kids not wanting to do anything or being “no good,” right? With a little direction, young people can do just about anything and are more than willing to help out if you believe in them. Rewards are nice too…be prepared to throw a pizza party after their time of service is over for the day.

Get a Job Kids who hold a job while going to school learn how to handle their money and budget their time. Limit work hours to fewer than 20 per week to ensure that their grades are not adversely affected. If your student is involved in extracurricular activities too, make sure that this time is included with the hours that they work. Maintaining good grades is essential, no job or outside activity is worth it if it takes away from their schooling.

In all cases, show your teen that you believe in him or her. As you know, parenting is much more than providing for their needs…you want to guide your child from youth toward adulthood by showing them that there is much more to life than all things electronic. So, gently disconnect your teen and get them involved with other pursuits.

US Military Electronic Attack Robust Systems for Warfare

When the United States Military plans an air-strike it plays tough and Electronic Attack is something that the United States is best at, as they come to win and set up the modern net-centric battle space. Anyone who is foolish enough to doubt the ominous ability of the greatest strategists in the world to get the job done, is so caught up in their own rhetoric that they will fall harder and have their optimistic exuberance crushed to the ground and thus their will to fight will turn to a short-term bewilderment until their last breath and the heat of a 1000 Suns during that split second of evaporation.

For over a week now I have been trying to re-write that sentence and I just can't, it must stand the way it is because that is the truth. Indeed that sentence is part of a book I am writing now? Maybe a few modifications, but essentially well, that's it really?

When people talk about the anti-aircraft weapons that Iran has, which they were sold by the Russians and Chinese, one must also consider that those are not of the same modern up to date generations of weapons technologies of the US Military. Actually they are not even close. As Iran continues to build nuclear weapons which will most likely end up in the hands of International Terrorists, the World must do something.

Even as the Iranian President threatens to blow Israel off the map, it is widely thought that Iran is un-defendable and currently surrounded. In fact its only main ally, Syria is a few minutes flight from Israel, ain't no one coming to their aid. We should be concerned with nuclear weapons in such nation-states and even more so in the hands of international terrorists too.

I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

Setting up a Surround Sound Audio System For Your Car

For decades now, car people have always pushed their car stereos to the limit in order to produce the best sound possible. Our grandparents’ cars with their bulky and static-filled AM radios gave way to the FM broadcasts and cassette tape playing stereo’s of our parents. Now, car manufacturers are going digital with the use of not only CD players but satellite radio with MP3 playing compatibility.

The latest and hottest growing trend in car audio now is the idea of surround sound speaker systems. The thought behind it is to have all the speakers in your car set up exactly like that surround sound audio system you have in your living room. There is a reason why everyone wants one in their car. It simply sounds incredible. Here is how you can go about bringing that movie theater sound experience into your daily ride to work.

* One of the first goals to check off your list is find a stereo head unit which allows you to wire in a surround-sound processor. Since the processor will be digital, your head unit needs to supply a digital signal. You will also need fiber-optic cables. They are used to transmit digital signals between the components. If you previously purchased a nice head unit but it cannot supply digital signals, get a CD changer with fiber-optic connection. Connect the processor to the CD changer but remember that unit you will not get a surround-sound effect, if you play a CD. You can always select a surround-sound processor that converts RCA signals to digital.

* Make sure your car is equipped with a high-end CD changer and/or DVD unit that plays the software that carries the surround-sound signals.

* You should install a five-channel amplifier that can provide power for the front speakers, the rear speakers, and the subwoofers. Each corner of the car plus the subwoofers will be separate channels.

* The center channel should have a 4- to 6-inch midrange speaker and a tweeter. This type of combination should be in its own enclosure and placed in the center portion of the car’s dashboard.

* You now need to install an amplifier to run the center-channel speakers. You can get away with a two-channel amplifier played bridged mono but have it contain an electronic crossover which can be outboard, or built in to the amplifiers.

* You are now set to begin installing the speakers which will be in all four corners of the car. Some of the newer cars already have speaker locations work perfectly surround-sound setting. Older cars are a different story and will require a touch of imagination and some work. You’ll need to add a tweeter high on the pillar at shoulder height, while a midrange speaker is used in the factory-made opening in the door.

* Now that all of your speakers are in place, set the electronic crossover for the center channel. Don't play it at full range but opt instead for about 80 Hz and up for optimal sound quality.

* Once everything has been installed, adjust the system to find the perfect fit of sound quality and volume for you. Play around with the amplifier gains and then the surround sound processor for any type of tweaks you may need.

Home Electronics - How to Find Hot Deals

On wish lists around the country, home electronics have bypassed traditional favorites like clothes, lingerie, and jewelry as the most coveted items. But whether you're buying home electronics for yourself and your family, or as a gift, the burning question is always: Where do I find hot deals?

After all, why pay premium prices for LCD flat screen TVs, an iPod, a digital camera, or a cell phone when you can get hot deals at a fraction of the cost? While it's true that the prices for all home electronics are trending downward, it pays to shop around for the best possible prices before you make a purchase.

LCD Flat Screen TVs: Although LCD flat screen TVs for home entertainment systems are massive and relatively expensive, portable LCD flat screen TVs are ultimately affordable - especially when you can find hot deals and discount prices. For example, a seven-inch LCD flat screen TV with a full channel VHF/UHF receiver, built-in speakers, 1440 x 234 resolution and an active matrix display, a detachable and mountable stand, and A/V input jacks might list for $249.99. You can, however, find it for $144.29, a savings of over 42 percent.

iPod: Every family needs at least one iPod, and although the iPod Shuffle lists for $179.99, there are places where you can get hot deals and purchase an iPod shuffle for $109.43, or a discount of 39 percent. Likewise, you can save over 27 percent on an iPod Nano, and pay only $289.77. If you're willing to buy a refurbished model, you can get it even cheaper.

Digital Camera: Let's face it: film cameras are so twentieth century. There's no need to bother with bulky camera equipment and film and developing costs when you can snap all the pictures you want with a digital camera. And, there's truly a digital camera for every budget, with prices ranging from $100 to $10,000 and more. But when you look for hot deals, you can get a lot more camera for your money. If your budget is $150, for example, you can probably find a digital camera that retails for $299, but that is discounted almost 50 percent. Again, if you are willing to buy a refurbished digital camera, the savings can be even greater.

Cell Phone: Everyone in the family needs a cell phone, so it only makes sense to look for hot deals on cell phones. If you buy every family member the same cell phone (or the same cell phone in a variety of colors), you can usually find a calling plan that is extremely cost effective.

There's no question that hot deals on home electronics - and even electronics that double as a car accessory - are out there. Your best bet is to look for an online discount source. Because online stores don't have to pay the overhead that brick-and-mortar stores have to pay, they usually offer lower prices. Online stores also move a lot of inventory, so their hot deals usually surpass those of even the electronics megastores. Always comparison shop, but remember that for the best hot deals, let your mouse do the clicking.

Buying Refurbished Electronics - Is it Worth the Risk?

Introduction:

We are always looking for new ways to save on the bigger purchase - irrespective of whether this is a new PC or notebook, a digital camera, or a big screen LCD HDTV for the living-room entertainment area. Seasonal and clearance sales are always on the agenda of bargain hunters, but there is a further option - that of buying refurnished products. For example, a refurbished LCD TV may sell online for anything from 50% to 70% of its retail price.

Still, even at these big savings, it is not easy to get someone to buy a refurbished product for the first time. To the uninformed, buying a refurbished product may seem like a compromise; it is as if buying a car with dents and scratches on the paintwork, or unknown problems with the mechanics. However, in the electronics world, things are somewhat different. It is unfortunate that to many, it is not so obvious what the tag 'refurbished electronics' does actually mean.

Refurbished electronics can be either third-part refurbs or manufacturer (factory) refurbs. Third-party refurbs offer greater savings and do come with a warranty but it is only factory refurbished electronics that come with a manufacturer warranty. For the smart shopper, buying factory refurbished electronics is a way to enjoy substantial discounts and still have a product that is essentially 'like new', but...

You need to exercise constant vigilance when buying refurbished electronics.

This is only possible if you have a thorough understanding of what the 'refurbished' tag, once assigned to a product, implies in the electronics world.

What 'refurbished' products are not?

Before we delve further into what may qualify as refurbished electronics, it is important to get a clear understanding of what cannot be labeled as 'refurbished'. In particular, there is the misconception that 'refurbished' and reconditioned' are the same.

A refurbished product may or may not have been installed, repaired, or slightly used for reasons given further on in this article. On the other hand, a reconditioned item is a used product, that may have been used for an extended period by a first owner - often under lease - but then was repaired (not necessarily by the manufacturer), and resold by a retailer.

'Used' re-conditioned products represent greater savings over refurb units as these sell cheaper, but then such products constitute a higher risk. This risk is even more pronounced when dealing with expensive electronic products such as rear projection TVs, home theater projectors, flat-panel HDTV sets and the like. You can never really tell what has been the impact on the aging of the respective electronic components inside the unit as a result of the previous use.

We say: Be wary of such products. Instead, if you are after a smart buy and a great bargain, opt only for 'factory certified' refurbished products. These still represent substantial savings over the normal retail price, and carry a manufacturer's warranty.

So... what qualifies as 'Refurbished Electronics'?

In general, refurbished electronics are items that were returned for one reason or another, to the manufacturer. These items are then re-tested at the factory to make sure they are in tip-top shape. Any defective or damaged parts - if need be - will be replaced in order to restore the product to its original specification, and then the product is repackaged 'like new'.

Consumer laws prevent manufacturers from selling anything considered factory refurbished electronics as 'new' since the original factory seal has been broken; hence these items are sold as 'refurbished products' often at deeply discounted prices.

More specifically, reasons for returns include:

Customer Return: Most major retailers offer a 30-day money back guarantee; during this period, a customer may return the product for whatever reason and still get full refund. If there is nothing wrong with the product, most stores will simple reduce the price and resell it as an 'open box' special. However, if there is some sort of defect, the product is returned to the manufacturer were it is inspected and/or repaired, and then repackaged for sale as a refurbished item.

Shipping and Exterior Damage: These include damaged packaging due to mishandling, the elements, etc., in which case the product itself may be perfectly fine. These may also include minor damage to the product exterior casing, such as dents, scratches, etc., and any other exterior damage that in it self would not affect the product performance. Retailers would normally return these products to the manufacturer. The manufacturer would then inspect the product, replace any damaged casing, etc., and then repackage the item just like new. However, these items cannot be sold as new; hence they are tagged as refurbished electronics.

Demonstration Units: Sometimes demonstration units at major retail stores, trade shows, and even returned items by product reviewers, are often returned to the manufacturer where they are inspected and/or repaired if needed, and repackaged as refurbished units.

Opened Box: Sometimes, if a box was simply opened, the item is returned to the manufacturer where it is re-tested and repackaged. Even though technically, there is no issue here, yet the item cannot be classified as new; instead, it will have to be sold as refurbished electronics.

Defect during Production: If a specific component is identified as defective once the product leaves the factory - say as a result of an abnormal number of customer returns during the warranty period, a manufacturer may recall a product from a specific batch or production run that exhibits the same defect. When this occurs, the manufacturer can repair all the defective units and send them back out to retailers for sale as refurbished units.

Overstock Items: While most retailers with an overstock of a particular item would simply reduce the price and put the item on sale for clearance, yet there are instances when a manufacturer wants to introduce a new model on the market at a time when there are still a substantial number of older models on stores shelves. In these circumstances, the manufacturer may opt to collect any remaining stock of the older model and redistribute them to specific refurb retailers for quick clearance. Overstock items are brand new items; these can be sold either as a 'special promos' for quick clearance, or can be labeled as refurbished electronics and sold at deep discounts.

To strike the best deal, you have to act fast, but not too fast!

Fast... because when it comes to refurbished electronics, you cannot expect to simply walk into a store and pick up your favorite refurbished LCD TV or plasma unit off the shelf. Major refurb retailers like Second Act, work with manufacturers and distributors to acquire as many products as possible, yet the quantity they acquire can vary from just a few units to a couple of hundred units. In other words, you never really know how long they will last, and at the big savings associated with refurbished products, inventory levels change all the time. Additionally, you never really know if a particular model will be available as refurbished item.

But... do not just jump on the first deal. Act too quick and you may equally miss on the right deal. Act only when you feel you have got the right product at the right price. Once you think you have found what you want, then it is time to check with the retailer about return policies and warranty issues. If the refurbish item is factory-refurbished and comes with a full manufacturer warranty, then it is time to act!

Finally, remember: Purchasing a refurbished item can be a great way to a smart buy. There is no reason why the 'refurbished' tag should lead to a negative connotation to the product under consideration. At the same time, it is important that you inspect the product yourself within the return policy period. This is especially important since with refurbished electronics, you are getting a bit of a hit on product warranty in that you are only getting a typical 90 days warranty against the one year or so associated with standard products.

Happy bargain hunting!

This article is an excerpt from a detailed informative guide appearing on Practical-Home-Theater-Guide.COM, and that discusses at greater length the issue of 'Buying Refurbished Electronics'. It provides additional tips and advice that should help you transform the risk into a great buy - one that results in a big reduction in price. This additional information should also prove useful especially when buying online.
